What these inspections are
Toronto Public Health inspects licensed child care centres for infection prevention and control: the everyday things that stop illness spreading, such as cleaning and disinfection, washrooms and diapering areas, toys and sensory play, sleep equipment and health policies. After each visit the inspector records a result, and the City publishes the past two years of results as open data.
These are infection-control inspections. Food safety is inspected separately by the City, and licensing is a separate job run by Ontario's Ministry of Education.
How to read a result
The City's data records each inspection as Pass or Conditional Pass, and we show those words exactly as written. The City's website describes results as Satisfactory, Re-inspection Required or Closed. Items an inspector notes are marked minor, significant or crucial. We explain all of it on how to read the results.
One inspection is one visit on one day. A centre that had something to fix last year and fixed it is not a centre with a problem today. We do not give scores, stars, rankings or "safe" and "unsafe" labels.

For parents
Use a result as a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict. Our free tour checklist for parents lists what to look at and ask when you visit, and what to ask a daycare about cleaning explains what a good answer sounds like.
For child care operators
If you run a centre, our page on preparing for an infection-control inspection is a calm, room-by-room list. If something about your centre looks wrong here, tell us.
