Pharmacy cleaning splits cleanly in two, and knowing where the split falls is the first thing to settle with any contractor. A pharmacy is a retail shop, a healthcare setting and — if it compounds — a controlled manufacturing environment, all inside one lease. Those three things are not cleaned by the same people to the same standard, and they should not be sold as if they were.

We clean the premises. We do not clean classified compounding areas. Clean rooms, anterooms and the engineering controls inside them are cleaned by your own trained personnel, following your pharmacy's validated written procedures, under the model standards the Ontario College of Pharmacists has adopted from NAPRA — the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities. That work has its own products, gowning, sequence and records.

Everything else in the building is ours: dispensary, retail floor, consultation rooms, washrooms, stock and staff areas, and the corridors and support space around a compounding suite. In a compounding pharmacy that is most of the square footage.

Why we are explicit about it

Because the alternative costs a pharmacy owner something real. An owner who assumes the cleaning contract covers the compounding suite has a gap in their programme that they do not know about — and it is their licence at stake, not their cleaner's. A contractor who is vague here is either careless or hoping you will not ask.

It is the same boundary we draw everywhere else on this site: on dental pages, instrument reprocessing stays with the clinical team; on salon and spa pages, implement reprocessing stays with the operator. The pattern is deliberate. We clean the environment, we document what we did, and we say plainly where our work ends.

What we clean in a pharmacy

Dispensary

Floors, work surfaces outside classified areas, counters and the counselling window, high-touch points, bins and the general order of the room — worked around your workflow, not through it.

Retail and OTC floor

Shelving and displays, aisle floors, entrance matting, baskets and carts, the till area and the front window — the part every customer judges you on in the first three seconds.

Consultation & vaccination rooms

Chairs, treatment surfaces, high-touch points and floors, cleaned to a clinical rather than a retail expectation, with the products and contact times logged.

Washrooms

Public and staff, on a documented schedule — and if you are an Ontario employer with a washroom, the cleaning record is not optional. See our free Bill 190 washroom log.

Stock, receiving & staff areas

Back shelving, receiving, the staff room and lunch area, and the loading route — the spaces that get skipped and then get noticed.

Around a compounding suite

The corridors, gowning approach and support rooms outside the classified boundary, on a tighter routine than a general retail floor, because what is tracked in from outside matters.

Access, security and consistency

A dispensary holds controlled substances, so access is arranged on your terms rather than ours — supervised, key-holding, or scheduled while a pharmacist is on site, whichever your policy requires. Crews are vulnerable-sector screened and consistent rather than rotating, which matters more in a pharmacy than in an office: the same people learn where they may and may not go, and you are not re-briefing strangers every week.

The record you keep

Every visit ends with a signed log — areas cleaned, products with their DIN numbers, contact times respected, and who did the work. It covers our side of the line and says so, which is exactly what makes it useful evidence rather than a vague assurance.

If you want the format first, the free pharmacy cleaning log is printable and needs no commitment. It is scoped to premises cleaning on purpose — it is not a clean-room log, and it should not be used as one.

What we do not do

Pharmacy cleaning — frequently asked questions

Do you clean pharmacy clean rooms and compounding areas?
No. Classified compounding areas — clean rooms, anterooms and the engineering controls inside them — are cleaned by your own trained personnel under the pharmacy's validated written procedures, as the NAPRA model standards adopted by the Ontario College of Pharmacists require. That work has its own products, its own gowning, its own sequence and its own records, and it is assessed as part of your pharmacy. We clean everything else in the building, which in a compounding pharmacy is most of it.
So what do you actually clean in a pharmacy?
The dispensary floor and work surfaces outside classified areas, the retail and OTC floor, shelving and displays, consultation and vaccination rooms, the waiting area, washrooms, staff room, stock and receiving areas, and the floors throughout. In a compounding pharmacy that includes the corridors and support space around the classified suite — the areas that still have to be clean for the suite to stay clean, but that are not themselves classified.
Why does the distinction matter so much?
Because a pharmacy owner who assumes the cleaning contract covers the compounding suite has a gap they do not know about, and it is their licence rather than ours that is exposed. It is the same line we draw on dental pages, where reprocessing stays with the clinical team, and on salon pages, where implement reprocessing stays with the operator. A cleaning company that is vague about this is either careless or hoping you will not ask.
Do you provide cleaning records?
Yes, for our side of the line. Every visit ends with a signed log: areas cleaned, products used with their Health Canada DIN numbers, contact times respected, and who did the work. It is yours to keep. Our free pharmacy cleaning log shows the format and is downloadable with no commitment — including if you want to hold your current cleaner to it.
Can you work outside dispensary hours?
Usually, and most pharmacies prefer it. A dispensary is a controlled space with narcotics on site, so access is arranged on your terms — supervised, key-holding, or scheduled while a pharmacist is present, whichever your policy requires. Crews are consistent rather than rotating, and vulnerable-sector screened.
Are your products suitable for a healthcare setting?
We use Health Canada DIN-registered disinfectants, used at the dilution on the label and left wet for the full contact time, on a surface that has been cleaned first. We work colour-coded and dirty-to-clean so a cloth from a washroom never reaches a consultation room. We will supply the product list and safety data sheets on request. What we will not do is claim a product is suitable for a classified compounding area — that selection belongs to your written procedures.
Do you handle pharmaceutical or biomedical waste?
No. Expired stock, returned medication, cytotoxic waste and sharps all move through controlled disposal streams that belong to the pharmacy and its licensed waste contractor. We handle ordinary waste and recycling, and we work around your waste stations rather than into them.
How is pharmacy cleaning priced?
After a walkthrough. Retail floor area, dispensary size, how many consultation and vaccination rooms, washroom count, floor type and its maintenance cycle, days per week, hours, and whether there is a compounding suite whose surrounding areas need a tighter routine. A quote given over the phone has not asked about any of that.

Where to get the standards themselves

We deliberately do not paraphrase the compounding standards on this page — they are detailed, they are the pharmacy's responsibility, and a cleaning contractor is the wrong source for them. Go to the bodies that publish and enforce them:
