What indoor environmental quality means
Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) is the umbrella term for the condition of an interior space as it affects the people in it — air, lighting, acoustics, thermal comfort and humidity. The part most tied to health, and most affected by cleaning, is indoor air quality (IAQ): the concentration of pollutants, particles and biological contaminants in the air people breathe. Because we spend so much of our time inside, and because the indoors can concentrate pollutants that outside would disperse, IAQ is a genuine public-health issue — not a comfort nicety.
What's actually in indoor air and dust
"Dust" sounds trivial. It is not. Settled indoor dust is a complex mixture, and much of what harms health is invisible and airborne. The main components:
- Particulate matter (PM). Tiny solid and liquid particles suspended in air, classed by size — PM10 (coarse) and PM2.5 (fine). Fine particles are the concern because they penetrate deep into the lungs. Indoors, they come from cooking, combustion, outdoor air, and the resuspension of settled dust.
- Biological allergens. Dust-mite allergen, pet dander, mould spores, pollen and cockroach allergen — the major triggers of asthma and allergic rhinitis (below).
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Gases that off-gas from paints, furnishings, adhesives, air fresheners — and, importantly, from cleaning products themselves. Cleaning can remove pollutants and, if the wrong products are used, add them.
- Microbial contaminants. Bacteria, viruses and mould, especially where there is moisture.
- Everyday debris. Shed human skin, textile fibres, soil tracked in on shoes, soot, and microplastics — the visible "dust" that is also a reservoir for the items above.
Ventilation is measured partly by carbon dioxide as a proxy — high CO₂ signals that not enough fresh air is being brought in, which lets everything else concentrate. Cleaning does not fix ventilation, but it directly controls the settled reservoir that ventilation would otherwise have to dilute.
The allergen story: dust mites, mould and dander
For the millions of people with asthma or allergies, indoor allergens are not an abstraction — they are the daily trigger. Three dominate:
Dust mites. Microscopic relatives of spiders, dust mites live in soft furnishings, bedding, carpets and settled dust, feeding on the flakes of skin humans constantly shed. It is their faecal particles and body fragments, carried in dust, that provoke allergic reactions and asthma. They thrive in warmth and humidity, which is why keeping indoor relative humidity down, washing bedding in hot water, and regularly removing dust reservoirs all reduce exposure.
Mould. Moulds grow wherever there is persistent moisture — damp walls, condensation, water-damaged materials — and release spores and fragments into the air that can irritate airways and trigger allergic and respiratory symptoms. The World Health Organization's guidance is clear that dampness and mould in buildings are associated with respiratory health effects. Mould is controlled first by fixing the moisture, then by cleaning and removing the growth.
Pet dander and pollen. Dander (tiny skin flakes from animals) and pollen tracked in from outdoors settle into dust and soft surfaces and re-enter the air with movement. Cockroach allergen is a further significant trigger in some settings. All respond to the same discipline: reduce the reservoir, clean frequently and well.
How cleaning helps — and how bad cleaning hurts
Here is the crucial nuance that separates professional cleaning from tidying: cleaning can either remove the airborne reservoir or stir it up, depending entirely on method.
Done badly, cleaning makes air quality worse for a while. Dry dusting a shelf, sweeping a hard floor, or running a cheap vacuum with a leaky filter lifts settled fine particles back into the air, where they linger and are breathed in. The room looks cleaner and the air is briefly dirtier.
Done well, cleaning captures and removes particles rather than redistributing them:
- HEPA filtration. A true HEPA filter captures at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns — the hardest size to trap — so a HEPA-filtered vacuum removes fine dust instead of blowing it back out the exhaust.
- Damp and microfibre methods. Damp-wiping and quality microfibre physically capture and hold fine particles, where dry cloths and feather dusters scatter them.
- Managing the big reservoirs. Carpets, upholstery, fabric partitions, high ledges and supply vents hold enormous amounts of dust and allergen. Regular, methodical attention to these — not just the visible floor — is where IAQ gains are won.
- Entryway matting. A large share of indoor dust and soil is simply walked in. Good matting and entrance cleaning stop contamination at the door, reducing everything downstream.
- Frequency matched to load. High-traffic and high-dust environments need cleaning often enough that the reservoir never builds to the point where normal activity keeps it airborne.
Cleaning is one of three levers
Indoor air quality is managed on three fronts, and honest guidance treats cleaning as one of them, not a cure-all:
- Source control — the most effective lever: fix moisture and dampness, choose low-emitting materials and furnishings, and use low-VOC cleaning products so the cleaning itself does not add pollutants.
- Ventilation — bringing in and filtering fresh air to dilute and remove what remains.
- Cleaning — removing the settled reservoir of dust, allergens and particles before it becomes airborne.
They reinforce each other. Cleaning without moisture control lets mould keep returning; ventilation without cleaning just recirculates a full reservoir; source control without cleaning ignores everything already tracked in. A serious IEQ program uses all three.
Sick building syndrome
When poor IEQ becomes chronic, it can produce sick building syndrome (SBS) — a recognised pattern in which occupants report headaches, irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, fatigue and poor concentration that clearly track with time spent in a specific building, yet without a single diagnosable illness or identified cause. SBS is associated with inadequate ventilation, dust and contaminants, chemical pollutants including VOCs, and humidity problems. (It is distinct from building-related illness, where a specific diagnosable condition, such as Legionnaires' disease, is traced to the building.) The standard response to SBS is exactly the three-lever approach above: improve ventilation, control pollutant sources, and clean thoroughly and correctly.
The productivity dimension
Beyond illness, indoor environmental quality affects how well people think and work. A growing body of research — including the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health "COGfx" studies led by Joseph Allen and colleagues — links better-ventilated, lower-pollutant indoor environments to measurably better cognitive performance. For any organisation, that reframes cleaning and air quality from a facilities cost into an investment in the health, comfort and output of the people inside. Clean air is not just safer; it helps people function.
What an IEQ-aware cleaning program looks like
Putting it together, cleaning that actually improves indoor air quality has a recognisable shape:
- HEPA-filtered vacuums and damp/microfibre methods as standard, so particles are captured, not scattered.
- Deliberate attention to the big reservoirs — carpets, soft furnishings, high dusting, vents and returns — not just visible floors.
- Entryway matting and frequent entrance cleaning to cut tracked-in soil at the source.
- Low-VOC, appropriately chosen products so the cleaning does not degrade the air it is meant to protect.
- Awareness of moisture: flagging damp, leaks and condensation before they become mould.
- Frequency matched to the building's traffic and use, so the reservoir never overwhelms the routine.
None of this is exotic; it is simply the difference between cleaning that makes a room look clean and cleaning that makes the air in it healthier to breathe.
Why it matters
Indoor air is the environment we are most immersed in and least aware of. Its quality lands hardest on the most vulnerable — children, older adults, and people with asthma or allergies — and quietly shapes the comfort, health and productivity of everyone else. Cleaning cannot do the whole job; ventilation and source control matter just as much. But cleaning is the lever that directly removes the dust and allergens already in the building, and doing it well is one of the most tangible, immediate contributions to the air people breathe every day.
