Why the sock trick works
Blinds are a row of narrow, flat surfaces that catch dust on both sides. Dusters mostly flick the dust into the air, and cloths only clean one side at a time. A sock over your hand lets your fingers and thumb pinch the slat from top and bottom at once, and the soft fabric grips the dust. One stroke per slat, both sides done.
First, check what your blinds are made of
- Vinyl or aluminium: a dry sock or a barely damp one is fine.
- Real wood or faux wood: real wood gets a dry sock only. Water can warp, stain or lift the finish. Faux wood (usually vinyl or composite) can usually take a barely damp sock, but check the maker's guidance.
- Fabric (roller, Roman, pleated, cellular or fabric vertical blinds): no water. Dust dry, or vacuum with a brush attachment, following the maker's care instructions.
What you need
- A clean, old sock (a fluffy or microfibre sock works best)
- A second sock, or a bowl of water with a drop of dish soap, for vinyl or aluminium only
- A vacuum with a brush attachment (optional)
- An old towel or sheet for the windowsill or floor
Step by step
- Lay a towel on the sill or floor to catch any falling dust.
- Close the slats so they are flat, then vacuum with a brush attachment if they are very dusty.
- Tilt the slats to horizontal (open) so you can reach each one.
- Put the sock on your hand.
- Pinch and slide. Pinch the first slat between your fingers and thumb and slide from one end to the other. Start at the top and work down so dust falls onto slats you have not done yet.
- Turn the sock inside out or switch to a fresh one when it gets grey.
- For vinyl or aluminium only, if there is grime as well as dust, dip a second sock in water with a drop of dish soap, wring it out until barely damp, and repeat. Then go over with a dry sock.
- Toss the socks in the wash. Done.
Vertical blinds
The same trick works on vinyl vertical blinds: turn the vanes so they face you, pinch each one at the top and slide down to the bottom. For fabric verticals, use a dry sock or a vacuum brush attachment only, and support the vane with your other hand so you do not pull it off its hook.
No water on wood or fabric blinds. Test any damp cleaning on a hidden slat first. Never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia, because the combinations release toxic gases, and you do not need either for blinds. Do not use vinegar on natural stone sills. Use a stable step stool for high windows, not a chair. And keep blind cords out of reach of young children, tied up and away from furniture they could climb.
Common mistakes
- Using water on wood or fabric blinds. It can warp, stain or leave water marks.
- Working bottom to top. Dust falls onto the slats you have just cleaned.
- Using a wet, dripping sock. Water runs down the cords and leaves streaks. Barely damp is enough, and only on vinyl or aluminium.
- Pulling hard on the slats. Light pressure is enough. Bent aluminium slats are hard to straighten.
- Waiting until they are filthy. A quick sock pass every couple of weeks is easier than a big clean twice a year.
What professionals use, and why
Cleaners often use a slat duster, a tool with several fabric-covered fingers that cleans several slats at once on the same pinch principle as the sock. They dust high to low, use a vacuum with a soft brush on fabric blinds, and keep water away from anything that is not vinyl or metal. For very dirty blinds, specialist blind cleaners use ultrasonic cleaning tanks, which shake dirt loose with sound waves in water, on blind types that can take it.
Office blinds
- Add blinds to the regular high-dusting routine, along with the tops of partitions, vents and ledges. Our guide to keeping a home office dust free covers the rest.
- Vertical blinds in meeting rooms are quick with the sock trick. Do them once a month.
- Kitchen and breakroom blinds collect grease as well as dust, so they may need the barely damp, soapy sock (vinyl or aluminium only).
- Use proper access for high windows. A stable step stool or ladder, used safely, never a desk chair.
- Sliding windows and patio doors collect dust in the track below the blinds too. See how to clean sliding door tracks.
If the sock is not enough
Sticky, greasy blinds (vinyl or aluminium) in kitchens may need a few passes with the soapy sock, then a dry one.
Very dusty blinds clean faster if you vacuum first with a brush attachment, then sock.
Take them down and wash them, but only if they are vinyl or aluminium and the maker allows it. Soak them in a tub of warm, soapy water, rinse and hang to dry fully before rehanging.
Stained fabric or wood blinds are a job for a specialist blind cleaner, or the maker's care instructions.
Frequently asked questions
How do you clean blinds quickly?
Slip a clean old sock over your hand, tilt the slats open, and pinch each slat between your fingers and thumb as you slide from one end to the other. You clean both sides at once. Start at the top and work down, and swap to a clean sock when it gets dusty.
Can you use water on wood blinds?
Not on real wood. Water can warp, stain or lift the finish, so use a dry sock or cloth only. Faux wood blinds can usually take a barely damp cloth, but check the maker's guidance.
How do you clean fabric blinds?
Dust them dry, or vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment, following the maker's care instructions. Do not use water on fabric blinds.
How do you clean greasy kitchen blinds?
For vinyl or aluminium blinds only, dip a sock in warm water with a drop of dish soap, wring it until barely damp, and wipe each slat. Then go over them with a dry sock. Very greasy blinds may need a few passes.
How do you clean vertical blinds?
Turn the vanes to face you, pinch each one at the top with a sock over your hand, and slide down. Use a dry sock or vacuum brush only on fabric verticals, and support the vane so it does not come off its hook.
How often should office blinds be dusted?
Many offices include blinds in a monthly high-dusting routine, with kitchen and breakroom blinds done more often because they collect grease.
